Banana bread became popular during the Great Depression as a way to make use of overripe bananas.

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a loaf pan.

In a mixing bowl, mash the ripe bananas with a fork.

In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt.

In a large mixing bowl, cream the butter and sugar together until light and fluffy.

Beat in the egg and vanilla extract.

Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture, mixing until just combined.

Fold in the mashed bananas and chopped nuts.

Pour the batter into the greased loaf pan.

Bake in the preheated oven for 50-60 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Remove from the oven and let it rest in the pan for 10 minutes.

Transfer the bread to a wire rack to cool completely before slicing.
