  1. In a mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, yeast, and salt.
  2. In a small saucepan, heat milk and butter until butter is melted.
  3. Add the milk mixture and egg to the dry ingredients. Mix until a soft dough forms.
  4. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 5 minutes, until smooth and elastic.
  5. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
  6. Punch down the dough and roll it out on a floured surface to about 1/2 inch thickness.
  7. Cut out doughnuts using a doughnut cutter or a round cookie cutter.
  8. Heat vegetable oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 350°F (175°C).
  9. Fry the doughnuts in batches for about 1-2 minutes per side, until golden brown.
  10. Remove the doughnuts from the oil and drain on a paper towel-lined plate.
  11. Dust the doughnuts with powdered sugar while they are still warm.
