Green bean casserole was created by the Campbell Soup Company in 1955 and has since become a popular Thanksgiving side dish in the United States.

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a large pot, bring water to a boil and blanch the green beans for 5 minutes. Drain and set aside.
  3. In a medium saucepan, combine the cream of mushroom soup, milk, salt, and black pepper. Heat over medium heat until warmed through.
  4. In a greased baking dish, add the blanched green beans and pour the mushroom soup mixture over them. Stir to combine.
  5. Bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes.
  6. Remove from the oven and sprinkle the French fried onions on top.
  7. Return to the oven and bake for an additional 5 minutes, or until the onions are golden brown.
  8. Let the casserole rest for 10 minutes before serving.
