Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). In a large bowl, combine the cornmeal, flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar. In a separate bowl, beat the eggs, then add the milk and melted butter. Mix well. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir until just combined. Finely chop the jalapeno peppers and fold them into the batter along with the cheddar cheese. Heat a cast iron skillet over medium heat and melt a tablespoon of butter. Pour the batter into the skillet and spread it evenly. Transfer the skillet to the preheated oven and bake for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Remove from the oven and let it rest for 10 minutes before serving.
