Twinkies were originally filled with banana cream until World War II banana rationing caused the company to switch to vanilla cream.

This is vegetarian recipe. Dish can be prepared in 75 minutes. Recipe requires some culinary experience (medium difficulty). Number of ingredients: 12.

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a Twinkie pan.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the cake flour, baking powder, and salt.
  3. In a large bowl, cream together the butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
  4. Beat in the egg and vanilla extract.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, alternating with the milk, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients.
  6. Spoon the batter into the prepared Twinkie pan, filling each cavity halfway.
  7. Bake for 12-15 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  8. Remove from the oven and let cool in the pan for 5 minutes. Then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  9. In a mixing bowl, beat together the vegetable shortening, powdered sugar, marshmallow creme, and vanilla extract until smooth and creamy.
  10. Using a piping bag or a ziplock bag with the corner snipped off, fill each Twinkie with the marshmallow filling.
  11. Allow the Twinkies to rest for 30 minutes before serving.
