Peel and thinly slice the Yukon Gold potatoes.

Rub a baking dish with butter.

Layer the potato slices in the baking dish.

Sprinkle garlic, thyme, salt, and black pepper over the potatoes.

In a saucepan, heat the heavy cream until hot but not boiling.

Pour the hot cream over the potatoes.

Sprinkle grated Gruyere cheese on top.

Cover the baking dish with foil.

Bake for 30 minutes.

Remove the foil and bake for an additional 20 minutes, or until the potatoes are golden and the cheese is bubbly.
