Brownies were invented in the United States and are believed to have originated in the late 19th century. The first brownie recipe appeared in a cookbook published in 1896.

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a baking pan.

In a microwave-safe bowl, melt the butter. Add sugar and mix well.

Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract.

In a separate bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt.

Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture and mix until well combined.

If desired, fold in the walnuts and chocolate chips.

Pour the batter into the greased baking pan and spread it evenly.

Bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out with a few moist crumbs.

Remove from the oven and let it cool in the pan for 10 minutes.

Cut into squares and serve.
