Sugar cookies have been enjoyed for centuries and are believed to have originated in the 1700s in Nazareth, Pennsylvania.

In a mixing bowl, cream together the butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.

Beat in the egg and vanilla extract.

In a separate bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined.

Cover the dough and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.

Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Roll the dough into small balls and place them on the prepared baking sheet, spacing them about 2 inches apart. Flatten each ball with the bottom of a glass dipped in powdered sugar.

Bake for 8-10 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden.

Allow the cookies to cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Dust with additional powdered sugar before serving, if desired.
