Gingerbread is believed to have originated in ancient Greece and was brought to Europe by Armenian monk Gregory of Nicopolis.

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9-inch square baking pan.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, ginger, cinnamon, cloves, and salt.
  3. In a large bowl, cream together butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the egg, then stir in the molasses.
  4. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, alternating with hot water. Mix well after each addition.
  5. Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan and smooth the top.
  6. Bake for 35-40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  7. Allow the gingerbread to cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  8. Serve with whipped cream.
