  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9-inch square baking dish.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, ginger, cinnamon, cloves, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In a large bowl, cream together the butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the molasses and egg.
  4. Gradually mix in the dry ingredients, alternating with the hot water, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients.
  5. Pour the batter into the prepared baking dish and arrange the sliced pears on top.
  6. Bake for 35-40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  7. Allow the gingerbread to cool in the baking dish for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  8. Dust with powdered sugar before serving.
