  1. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, ginger, cinnamon, cloves, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.
  2. In a large bowl, cream together butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in molasses and egg.
  3. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined.
  4. Divide the dough into two equal portions and shape each into a disk. Wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.
  5. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  6. On a lightly floured surface, roll out one portion of the dough to about 1/4 inch thickness. Cut out the desired shapes for the cottage walls, roof, and other decorations.
  7. Transfer the cutouts to the prepared baking sheet and bake for 10-12 minutes, or until lightly browned around the edges.
  8. Remove from the oven and let cool completely on a wire rack.
  9. In a small bowl, mix powdered sugar and water to make a thick icing.
  10. Assemble the gingerbread cottage using the icing as glue. Decorate with assorted candies and decorations.
  11. Allow the icing to set before serving.
