French Onion Soup is believed to have originated in ancient Rome, where it was a popular dish among the poor.

Heat butter and olive oil in a large pot. Add sliced onions and cook until caramelized.

Add minced garlic and cook for another minute.

Sprinkle flour over the onions and stir well.

Pour in white wine and let it simmer for a few minutes.

Add broth, bay leaves, and thyme sprigs. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 30 minutes.

Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).

Ladle the soup into oven-safe bowls. Top each bowl with a slice of French baguette.

Sprinkle grated Gruyere cheese over the bread.

Place the bowls on a baking sheet and bake for about 10 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
