Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9-inch square baking pan.

In a large bowl, sift together the flour, ginger, cinnamon, cloves, baking soda, and salt.

In a separate bowl, mix together the melted butter, sugar, molasses, and egg until well combined.

Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, alternating with hot water, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined.

Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan and smooth the top.

Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Remove from the oven and let cool in the pan for 10 minutes. Then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

Serve the gingerbread plain or with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream.
