Toffee bars are believed to have originated in England in the early 19th century and were traditionally made with butter, sugar, and treacle.

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x13-inch baking pan.

In a large mixing bowl, cream together the butter and brown sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the egg yolk and vanilla extract.

Gradually add the flour and salt, mixing well after each addition.

Press the dough evenly into the prepared baking pan.

Bake for 20 minutes or until golden brown.

Remove from the oven and immediately sprinkle the chocolate chips over the hot crust. Let them melt for a few minutes, then spread the chocolate evenly over the crust.

Sprinkle with chopped nuts, if desired.

Allow the bars to cool completely in the pan.

Cut into bars and serve.
