Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F). Grease a baking dish.

In a bowl, combine the dates and boiling water. Stir in the baking soda and let it sit for 10 minutes.

In a separate bowl, cream together the butter and brown sugar. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.

In another bowl, whisk together the flour and baking powder. Gradually add the flour mixture to the butter mixture, alternating with the milk. Fold in the date mixture.

Pour the batter into the prepared baking dish and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Remove from the oven and let it cool for 10 minutes. Serve warm with toffee sauce and whipped cream.
