Chocolate cake is said to have been invented in 1764 by Dr. James Baker, who made a ‘chocolate cake’ by grinding cocoa beans between two millstones.

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9-inch (23cm) round cake pan.

In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.

Add the eggs, milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients. Mix until well combined.

Stir in the boiling water. The batter will be thin, but that's okay.

Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan and bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Remove from the oven and let the cake cool in the pan for 10 minutes. Then transfer it to a wire rack to cool completely.

Once the cake has cooled, you can frost it with your favorite frosting or enjoy it plain.
