  1. Preheat the oven to 160°C (325°F/Gas 3). Grease and line the base of a 20 cm (8 inch) round cake tin with baking paper.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Beat in the eggs, one at a time, until well combined.
  4. Sift in the flour and baking powder, then fold in the ground almonds.
  5. Stir in the mixed peel, raisins, currants, glacé cherries, and almond extract.
  6. Spoon the mixture into the prepared cake tin and smooth the surface.
  7. Arrange the blanched almonds on top of the cake.
  8. Bake in the preheated oven for 1 hour or until a skewer inserted into the center comes out clean.
  9. Remove from the oven and allow to cool in the tin for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  10. Serve and enjoy!
