Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).

In a large bowl, cream together the butter and brown sugar until smooth.

Beat in the egg and molasses until well blended.

In a separate bowl, combine the flour, ground ginger, cinnamon, baking soda, and salt.

Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture, mixing well after each addition.

Stir in the fresh ginger.

Roll the dough into small balls, about 1 inch in diameter.

Roll each ball in granulated sugar to coat.

Place the coated balls onto ungreased baking sheets, spacing them about 2 inches apart.

Bake for 8-10 minutes, or until set and lightly browned.

Allow the cookies to cool on the baking sheets for 5 minutes, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely.
