Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F) and grease a baking pan.

Melt the dark chocolate and butter together in a heatproof bowl over simmering water, stirring until smooth.

In a separate bowl, whisk together the sugar, eggs, and vanilla extract.

Gradually pour the melted chocolate mixture into the egg mixture, stirring until well combined.

In another bowl, sift together the flour, cocoa powder, and salt. Add this dry mixture to the wet mixture and fold until just combined.

If desired, fold in the walnuts.

Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan and smooth the top.

Bake for about 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out with a few moist crumbs.

Remove from the oven and let it cool in the pan for about 10 minutes.

Transfer the brownies to a wire rack and let them cool completely before serving.

Optionally, dust with powdered sugar or serve with ice cream.
