Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, and salt. Cut in butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  2. In a small saucepan, heat milk until warm. Stir in yeast and let it sit for 5 minutes until foamy.
  3. Add yeast mixture, egg, and vanilla extract to the flour mixture. Stir until a soft dough forms.
  4. Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and knead for about 5 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  5. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  6. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  7. Punch down the dough and divide it into 12 equal pieces. Shape each piece into a ball and flatten it slightly.
  8. Place a spoonful of fruit preserves in the center of each dough round. Fold the edges over the filling and pinch to seal.
  9. Arrange the pastries on the prepared baking sheet. Cover with a kitchen towel and let them rise for another 30 minutes.
  10. Bake for 18-20 minutes or until golden brown.
  11. Remove from the oven and let the pastries cool on a wire rack.
  12. Dust with powdered sugar before serving.
