In a small bowl, dissolve yeast in warm milk.

In a large bowl, combine flour, sugar, salt, cinnamon, and cardamom. Cut in butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

Add the yeast mixture and beaten egg to the flour mixture. Mix until a soft dough forms.

Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 5 minutes, until smooth and elastic.

Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.

Preheat the oven to 200°C (400°F).

Punch down the dough and divide it into 8 equal pieces. Shape each piece into a smooth ball.

Place the balls on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let them rise for another 30 minutes.

Brush the buns with beaten egg and sprinkle with pearl sugar.
