Czech Kolache

In a mixing bowl, combine warm milk, yeast, and a pinch of sugar. Let it sit for 5 minutes until foamy.

In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, and salt.

Add butter, egg yolks, and vanilla extract to the yeast mixture. Mix well.

Gradually add the flour mixture to the yeast mixture, stirring until a soft dough forms.

Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 5 minutes until smooth and elastic.

Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until doubled in size.

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Punch down the dough and divide it into 12 equal pieces. Shape each piece into a ball.

Place the dough balls on the prepared baking sheet, leaving some space between them.

Use your thumb to make an indentation in the center of each dough ball. Fill each indentation with fruit preserves.
