In a large saucepan, combine the sugar, butter, heavy cream, corn syrup, and salt.

Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture reaches 248°F (120°C) on a candy thermometer.

Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract.

Pour the mixture into a greased baking dish and let it cool for about 1 hour.

Cut into small squares and wrap each caramel in wax paper.
