  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the dough ingredients and mix until the dough comes together.
  2. Knead the dough until smooth and elastic.
  3. Cover the dough and let it rise for 1 to 2 hours, or until doubled in size.
  4. Divide the dough into 4 equal pieces and roll each piece into a 10-inch circle.
  5. Place one circle on a parchment-lined baking sheet and spread 1/4 cup of filling on top.
  6. Repeat with the remaining dough circles and filling, stacking them on top of each other.
  7. Place a 2 1/2-inch round cutter in the center of the stacked circles and press down lightly to make an indentation.
  8. Using a sharp knife or bench scraper, cut the dough into 16 equal strips, starting at the cutter and working outward.
  9. Twist each strip twice and pinch the ends together to form a star shape.
  10. Cover the bread with plastic wrap and let it rise for 30 minutes.
  11. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  12. Brush the bread with beaten egg and sprinkle with pearl sugar.
  13. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown.
  14. Remove from the oven and let it cool before serving.
