The tradition of baking cookies during Christmas dates back to Medieval Europe, where it was believed that the sweet aroma of freshly baked cookies would ward off evil spirits.

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).

In a large bowl, cream together the butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until smooth.

Beat in the egg and vanilla extract.

In a separate bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking soda, and salt. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing well.

Stir in the chocolate chips.

Roll the dough into small balls and place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until golden brown.

Remove from the oven and let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes.

While the cookies are cooling, crush the candy canes into small pieces.

Press the crushed candy canes onto the tops of the cookies.

Transfer the cookies to a wire rack to cool completely. Enjoy!
