Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a cupcake tin with liners.

In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt.

In a separate large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.

Beat in the eggs, one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract and espresso powder.

Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, alternating with the milk. Mix until just combined.

Divide the batter evenly among the cupcake liners, filling each about 2/3 full.

Bake for 18-20 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Remove from the oven and let the cupcakes cool in the tin for 5 minutes, then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.

For the mocha buttercream, beat the butter until creamy. Gradually add the powdered sugar, cocoa powder, espresso powder, vanilla extract, and milk or cream. Beat until light and fluffy.
