The first brownie recipe appeared in the 1897 Sears, Roebuck catalog, but it didn’t contain chocolate. The chocolate brownie as we know it today became popular in the early 20th century.

  1. Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Melt the butter and dark chocolate together in a microwave or on a stovetop using a double boiler.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the eggs, granulated sugar, and vanilla extract until well combined.
  4. Pour the melted chocolate mixture into the egg mixture and stir until smooth.
  5. In another bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt.
  6. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined.
  7. Fold in the chocolate chips.
  8. Drop spoonfuls of the dough onto the prepared baking sheet, spacing them about 2 inches apart.
  9. Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until the edges are set and the centers are slightly soft.
  10. Allow the cookies to cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.
