Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine flour, sugar, yeast, and salt.
  2. In a small saucepan, heat milk and butter until butter is melted. Let it cool slightly.
  3. Add milk mixture and eggs to the dry ingredients. Mix until a dough forms.
  4. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 5 minutes, until smooth and elastic.
  5. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
  6. In a separate bowl, mix cream cheese, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract until smooth.
  7. Punch down the dough and roll it out into a rectangle. Spread the cream cheese mixture evenly over the dough.
  8. Roll up the dough tightly, starting from the long side.
  9. Cut the rolled dough in half lengthwise, exposing the layers. Twist the two halves together, forming a braid.
  10. Place the babka in a greased loaf pan and let it rise for another 30 minutes.
  11. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  12. Bake the babka for 40-45 minutes, or until golden brown.
  13. Remove from the oven and let it cool in the pan for 10 minutes.
  14. Transfer the babka to a wire rack and let it cool completely before serving.
