Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a baking dish.

In a large mixing bowl, combine oats, flour, brown sugar, baking soda, and salt.

Melt the butter and add it to the dry ingredients. Mix well.

Press half of the mixture into the baking dish to form the crust.

Bake for 10 minutes.

Remove from the oven and pour the caramel sauce over the crust.

Sprinkle the remaining oat mixture and chopped nuts (if desired) over the caramel layer.

Return to the oven and bake for an additional 15 minutes.

Allow to cool for 30 minutes before cutting into bars.
