Braided Coffee Cake with Apple-Ginger Filling Recipe
Ingredients
Instructions
-
In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, and salt. Cut in the unsalted butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
-
In a separate bowl, whisk together the egg, milk, and vanilla extract. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and mix until just combined.
-
Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 1-2 minutes until smooth. Divide the dough into 2 equal portions.
-
Roll out one portion of dough into a rectangle approximately 12x8 inches.
-
In a small mixing bowl, combine the chopped apples, brown sugar, ground cinnamon, and ground ginger. Spread half of the apple filling evenly over the rolled out dough.
-
Starting from the long side, tightly roll up the dough into a log. Using a sharp knife, cut the log in half lengthwise, leaving about 1 inch at the top uncut. Gently twist the two halves together, keeping the cut side facing up.
-
Transfer the braided dough to a greased baking sheet. Repeat steps 4-6 with the remaining dough and apple filling.
-
Cover the braided coffee cakes with a clean kitchen towel and let them rest for 20 minutes.
-
Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the coffee cakes for 35-40 minutes or until golden brown.
-
Remove from the oven and let cool on a wire rack.
-
Once cooled, dust the braided coffee cakes with powdered sugar before serving.
