  1. Rinse and drain the black-eyed peas. Cook the peas in boiling water until tender, about 20 minutes. Drain and set aside.
  2. Finely chop the onion and mince the garlic cloves.
  3. In a large bowl, combine the cooked black-eyed peas, chopped onion, minced garlic, cornmeal, all-purpose flour, baking powder, salt, and black pepper. Mix well.
  4. Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Form the pea mixture into patties and fry until golden brown, about 3-4 minutes per side. Remove from the skillet and set aside.
  5. In the same skillet, add the turnip greens, beer, vegetable broth, apple cider vinegar, brown sugar, red pepper flakes, and salt. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 15 minutes, or until the greens are tender.
  6. Serve the black-eyed pea cakes with the beer-braised turnip greens.
