Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.

Cut the cold butter into small cubes and add it to the dry ingredients. Use your fingertips or a pastry cutter to cut the butter into the flour until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

Stir in the raisins.

In a separate bowl, whisk together the egg, buttermilk, and vanilla extract.

Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir until just combined.

Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and gently knead it a few times until it comes together.

Pat the dough into a 1-inch thick circle and cut it into 8 wedges.

Place the scones onto the prepared baking sheet and brush the tops with a little extra buttermilk.
