Banana bread became popular in the United States during the Great Depression when resourceful housewives began using overripe bananas instead of throwing them away.

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x5-inch loaf pan.
  2. In a mixing bowl, mash the ripe bananas with a fork.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking soda, and salt.
  4. In a large bowl, cream together the unsalted butter and granulated sugar. Add the egg and vanilla extract, and mix well.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, alternating with the buttermilk. Stir in the mashed bananas and chopped walnuts.
  6. Pour the batter into the prepared loaf pan and smooth the top.
  7. Bake for 55-60 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  8. Remove from the oven and let the banana bread cool in the pan for 10 minutes. Transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  9. Slice and serve.
