Banana bread became popular in the United States during the Great Depression when resourceful home cooks found ways to use overripe bananas instead of letting them go to waste.

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x5-inch loaf pan.

In a large mixing bowl, mash the ripe bananas with a fork.

In a separate bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.

In another bowl, cream together the unsalted butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.

Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract.

Gradually add the dry ingredients to the banana mixture, alternating with the milk, until just combined.

Pour the batter into the prepared loaf pan and smooth the top.

Bake for 55-60 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
