  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9-inch round cake pan.
  2. Peel and core the pears or apples, then slice them into thin wedges.
  3. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
  4. In a separate large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract.
  5. Gradually mix in the dry ingredients, alternating with the milk. Begin and end with the dry ingredients. Mix until just blended.
