Afghans are a popular cookie in New Zealand, but they actually originated in Afghanistan.

Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F) and line a baking tray with parchment paper.

In a mixing bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.

Add the cocoa powder, egg, and vanilla essence to the butter mixture and mix well.

Sift in the flour and baking powder, then fold in the walnuts.

Roll the mixture into small balls and place them on the prepared baking tray.

Flatten each ball slightly with the back of a fork.

Bake in the preheated oven for 12 minutes or until firm.

Allow the afghans to cool on the baking tray for 5 minutes, then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.

In a small bowl, mix together the icing sugar and water to make a thick icing.

Drizzle the icing over the cooled afghans and dust with cocoa powder.

Allow the icing to set before serving.
