  1. In a mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, yeast, and salt.
  2. In a small saucepan, heat the milk and butter until the butter melts. Let it cool slightly.
  3. Add the milk mixture and egg to the dry ingredients. Mix until a soft dough forms.
  4. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  5. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  6. Punch down the dough and roll it out to about 1/2 inch thickness.
  7. Use a donut cutter or a round cookie cutter to cut out the doughnuts.
  8. Heat vegetable oil in a deep pan or fryer to 350°F (175°C).
  9. Fry the doughnuts for about 1-2 minutes on each side until golden brown.
  10. Remove from the oil and drain on paper towels.
  11. Dust the doughnuts with powdered sugar before serving.
