In a large mixing bowl, combine the vanilla cake mix, eggs, vegetable oil, and milk. Mix until well combined.

Fold in the semi-sweet chocolate chips.

Divide the batter equally between the prepared cake pans.

Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cakes comes out clean.

Remove the cakes from the oven and let them cool in the pans for 10 minutes. Then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.

In a small saucepan, combine the cherries, sugar, lemon juice, and cornstarch. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens and comes to a boil. Remove from heat and let it cool.

In a mixing bowl, beat the whipped cream until stiff peaks form. Stir in the vanilla extract and powdered sugar.

Place one cake layer on a serving plate. Spread a layer of cherry curd filling over the cake. Top with the second cake layer.
