  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Melt butter in a 9-inch (23cm) round cake pan and sprinkle brown sugar evenly over melted butter.
  3. Arrange pineapple slices on top of the brown sugar, placing a cherry in the center of each pineapple slice.
  4. In a mixing bowl, combine flour, baking powder, and salt.
  5. In a separate bowl, cream together white sugar and softened butter.
  6. Beat in eggs one at a time, then stir in vanilla extract.
  7. Gradually add the flour mixture to the sugar mixture, alternating with milk.
  8. Pour the batter over the pineapple slices in the cake pan.
  9. Bake for 40 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  10. Allow the cake to cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then invert onto a serving plate.
  11. Serve the cake warm or at room temperature.
