Baklava is believed to have been invented by the Assyrians around the 8th century B.C. and later adopted by the Ottoman Empire.

  1. Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F).
  2. In a food processor, finely chop the walnuts and pistachios.
  3. In a saucepan, combine sugar, water, and lemon juice. Bring to a boil and simmer for 10 minutes to make a syrup.
  4. Melt the butter.
  5. Brush a baking dish with melted butter.
  6. Layer half of the phyllo sheets in the dish, brushing each sheet with melted butter.
  7. Sprinkle half of the nut mixture evenly over the phyllo sheets.
  8. Layer the remaining phyllo sheets on top, again brushing each sheet with melted butter.
  9. Sprinkle the remaining nut mixture over the top.
  10. Cut the baklava into diamond or square shapes.
  11. Bake for 35-40 minutes, or until golden brown.
  12. Pour the syrup over the hot baklava.
  13. Allow the baklava to cool and rest for at least 1 hour before serving.
  14. Drizzle with honey before serving.
