Thumbprint cookies are believed to have originated in Sweden and are traditionally filled with lingonberry jam.

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a medium bowl, mix together the flour and salt.
  3. In a separate large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  4. Gradually add the flour mixture to the butter mixture, mixing well after each addition.
  5. Roll the dough into 1-inch balls and place them on the prepared baking sheet. Make an indentation in the center of each ball using your thumb or the back of a spoon.
  6. Fill each indentation with a teaspoon of jam or preserves.
  7. Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden.
  8. Allow the cookies to cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes, then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.
