Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9-inch round cake pan.

In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, ground ginger, cinnamon, and cloves.

In a separate large mixing bowl, cream together the butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the molasses and grated fresh ginger.

Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, alternating with the stout beer. Mix until just combined.

Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan and smooth the top. Bake for 40-45 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
