  1. In a large bowl, mix the flour, sugar, and salt. Cut in the butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. In a separate bowl, beat the egg and water together, then add it to the flour mixture. Stir until the dough comes together.
  2. Divide the dough into 8 equal portions and shape them into balls. Roll out each ball into a 4-inch circle.
  3. Spoon 1 tablespoon of fruit jam onto one half of each dough circle. Fold the other half over the filling and press the edges to seal. Use a fork to crimp the edges.
  4. In a large skillet, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat. Fry the empanadas in batches until golden brown, about 3 minutes per side. Remove from the skillet and drain on paper towels.
