  1. Preheat the oven to 325°F (165°C).
  2. In a saucepan, heat the milk until hot but not boiling.
  3. In a mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, sugar, and vanilla extract.
  4. Slowly pour the hot milk into the egg mixture while continuously whisking.
  5. Strain the mixture through a fine-mesh sieve into a baking dish.
  6. Sprinkle the ground nutmeg on top.
  7. Place the baking dish in a larger roasting pan and fill the pan with enough hot water to reach halfway up the sides of the baking dish.
  8. Bake for about 60 minutes or until the custard is set but still slightly jiggly in the center.
  9. Remove from the oven and let it rest for 30 minutes.
  10. Serve warm or chilled.
