Pretzels have been around for over 1,400 years and were originally created by monks as a reward for children who learned their prayers.

  1. In a large bowl, combine flour, yeast, sugar, and salt. Gradually add warm water and mix until a dough forms.
  2. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  3. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  4. Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C).
  5. In a large pot, bring water to a boil. Add baking soda and stir until dissolved.
  6. Divide the dough into 8 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a long rope and shape it into a pretzel.
  7. Carefully drop each pretzel into the boiling water for about 30 seconds, then remove with a slotted spoon and place on a greased baking sheet.
  8. Brush each pretzel with melted butter and sprinkle with coarse salt and black sesame seeds.
  9. Bake for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown.
  10. Serve warm and enjoy!
