Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a microwave-safe bowl, melt the semisweet chocolate and butter together in 30-second intervals, stirring after each interval, until smooth. Set aside to cool slightly.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, cream together the granulated sugar and eggs until light and fluffy. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, alternating with the whole milk, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients.
  5. Fold in the melted chocolate mixture until well combined. Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans.
  6. Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cakes comes out clean.
  7. Remove the cakes from the oven and let them cool in the pans for 10 minutes. Then, transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.
  8. In a chilled mixing bowl, whip the heavy cream and powdered sugar together until stiff peaks form.
  9. Place one cake layer on a serving plate and spread a layer of vanilla cream filling on top. Place the second cake layer on top and frost the entire cake with the remaining vanilla cream filling.
  10. Refrigerate the cake for at least 1 hour before serving to allow the flavors to meld together.
  11. Enjoy!
