Gingerbread has been enjoyed for centuries and is often associated with the holiday season, but it was originally created as a medicinal remedy in ancient Greece and Egypt.

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9x9-inch baking pan.

In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, ginger, cinnamon, cloves, and salt.

In a large bowl, cream together the butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the egg and molasses.

Gradually stir the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients. Mix in the hot water until well combined.

Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan and smooth the top.

Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Allow the gingerbread to cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

In a small bowl, whisk together the powdered sugar and vanilla extract. Drizzle the glaze over the cooled gingerbread.
