  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a baking dish.
  2. In a medium saucepan, combine the sugar, flour, and salt. Gradually stir in the milk.
  3. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens and comes to a boil. Continue stirring for 2 more minutes.
  4. Remove the saucepan from heat. In a small bowl, beat the egg yolks. Gradually whisk about 1/4 of the hot mixture into the yolks. Then, pour the yolk mixture back into the saucepan, whisking constantly.
  5. Return the saucepan to heat and bring to a gentle boil. Cook and stir for an additional 2 minutes.
  6. Remove from heat, stir in the butter and vanilla extract.
  7. Arrange a layer of vanilla wafers in the greased baking dish. Spread about half of the banana slices over the wafers. Top with half of the pudding mixture.
  8. Repeat the layers and top with more vanilla wafers.
  9. Bake in the preheated oven for 20 to 25 minutes, or until lightly browned.
  10. Allow the pudding to cool for 1 hour before serving.
  11. Serve topped with whipped cream and banana slices.
