Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).

In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, ginger, cinnamon, cloves, baking soda, and salt.

In a large bowl, cream together butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in egg and molasses.

Gradually mix in the dry ingredients. Stir in hot water.

Pour batter into a greased and floured 9-inch square baking pan.

Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Allow the gingerbread to cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then remove from pan and let it cool completely on a wire rack.
