  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). Grease a 9-inch square baking pan.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the cornmeal, flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar.
  3. In a separate bowl, beat the egg. Add the milk and vegetable oil, and mix well.
  4. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir until just combined.
  5. Melt the butter and pour it into the prepared baking pan. Swirl the pan to coat the bottom and sides with butter.
  6. Pour the batter into the pan and spread it evenly.
